Reasons to make Pickled Courgette Preserves

Pickled courgettes are a great way to preserve the freshness of courgettes. When properly pickled, they can last for months.

Also, pickled courgettes are very versatile. They can be used in a variety of dishes, from sandwiches and salads to enhancing main course meals.

Then, of course, there is the fact that pickled courgettes are simply delicious. The pickling process brings out the natural sweetness of the courgette, and the result is a treat that is both tangy and crunchy.

If you are looking for a tasty and practical way to preserve your courgettes, pickling is the way to go.

Making Pickled Courgettes

The key to making pickled courgettes is to choose fresh, firm fruits. If they are too ripe they will not pickle well and may fall apart during the pickling process. You can use green or yellow courgettes or a combination of the two for visual appeal.

Once you have selected your courgettes, wash them thoroughly and trim off the ends. Next, cut the courgettes into thin slices or your preferred shape e.g. medium narrow spears.

Now, it’s time to make the pickling solution. To do this, combine vinegar, water, sugar, salt, and spices in a large saucepan over medium heat. Then you bring the mixture to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer for 5 minutes.

Finally, you add the courgette pieces and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the pickles to cool in the pickling solution. Once they are cool, transfer the pickles to jars or containers and store them in a cool, dark place. Enjoy your pickled courgettes all winter long!

TIPS for making this pickle

Pickled courgettes are a great way to add some extra flavour to your dishes.

Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your pickled courgettes:

1. Start with fresh, good-quality courgettes. Avoid any that are overgrown or have soft spots. Courgette preserves will only be as good as the courgettes you use, so make sure that you select ones with this in mind.

2. Cut the courgettes into uniform pieces. This will help them pickle evenly and ensure that they have a consistent texture.

3. Use vinegar that has a high acidity level; at least 5% acetic acid. This will help to preserve the pickled courgettes and prevent them from going bad too quickly.

4. Add some spices or herbs to your pickling mixture. This will give the pickled courgettes an extra boost of flavour. Try adding things like garlic, peppercorns, or dill.

5. Make sure the pickling liquid covers the courgettes completely. This will help to prevent mould from forming.
